While most see the Inner Sphere as a haven of peace, prosperity, and progress in a galaxy filled with strife, the Rebel Guerrillas define themselves by their opposition to it. Their group traces its origins to the Mandar sector, which fell into civil war and collapse, caused by groups who sought to break away to join the Inner Sphere.

Many within Mandar blamed the Inner Sphere’s ruling Galactic Council for their support and funding of these break away elements. Those who refused to accept the resulting peace and gradual integration into the Inner Sphere formed the Rebel Guerrilla movement, continuing the war even though their former factions had collapsed. These Rebels sought out new allies both within the Inner Sphere and in nearby Sectors, gradually organising opposition to the Inner Sphere into a broad coalition.

Few in number and unable to challenge the Galactic Council on equal terms, the Guerrilla have scattered themselves throughout the galaxy, as their hidden cells work tirelessly to undermine the Council’s influence wherever possible. Their membership draws on a mix of those disaffected by life within the Inner Sphere, and daring adventurers and mercenaries who seek to challenge the most powerful faction in known space. While lacking the infrastructure and organisation of more traditional factions, the Guerrillas are able to draw on a variety of species, tactics, and technology from throughout the galaxy.

For those in the Sirius Sector, the conflict between the Rebel Guerrillas and Galactic Council is a remote one, which they hold little stake in. However, the Guerrilla’s sophisticated technologies from Mandar and the Inner Sphere have attracted the attention of a number of factions in Sirius. The Guerrillas have no interest in overthrowing the local regimes, but have been known to get involved with local conflicts when they feel it is necessary. Sometimes, they may serve as mercenaries and allies to local factions when their interests align, whilst at other times they may steal tech or help potential recruits defect or escape prison. The Guerrillas try to avoid escalating these conflicts, and as a result, many within the Sirius Sector do not realise the true scale of their organisation.

How will you challenge the greatest power in the galaxy?

History

Mandar Sector

The Mandar Sector was home to a number of independent factions next to the Inner Sphere. While most systems eagerly applied to join the Inner Sphere under the Galactic Council, Mandarian factions worked to maintain their independence, both culturally and economically. A minority within Mandar disputed this and sought to join the Inner Sphere.

Influence

The Inner Sphere began to intervene by pouring resources into potential allies in Mandar, with the goal of forcing assimilation. The Inner Sphere’s resources allowed these select generals, merchants and politicians to grow powerful and wealthy. These allies kept their ties secret and instead presented themselves as moderates who were willing to compromise. However, they slowly worked to consolidate power for themselves.

Betrayal

Once these Inner Sphere sympathisers felt that their positions were secure, they openly applied for Inner Sphere membership. A couple brought their entire factions, others merely took their wealth or weapons and defectors. The sudden shift caught their opponents off guard and caused economic shock throughout Mandar.

Civil War

Soon after this, the Inner Sphere’s involvement was discovered in Mandar. Civil War soon flared as neither side was willing to concede ground. The war ended quickly and conclusively as the Inner Sphere moved to defend the Mandar factions that sought to join them. The remaining Mandar factions collapsed completely after their defeat, and many soon applied to join the Inner Sphere themselves.

Rebels

Those who refused to accept peace formed the Rebel Guerrilla movement, seeking to continue the war even though their old factions had collapsed. These Rebels sought out new allies both within the Inner Sphere and in nearby Sectors, gradually organising opposition to the Inner Sphere into a broad coalition.

In Sirius

For those in the Sirius Sector, the conflict between the Rebels and Galactic Council is a remote one which holds little interest. However, Rebels have many sophisticated technologies from Mandar and the Inner Sphere, which many factions in the Sirius Sector are eager to acquire.

Society

Formed by dissidents from the Mandar Sector, the Rebel Guerrillas have grown and expanded to incorporate numerous rebels and groups from throughout the Galaxy. Though they are united by a sense of common cause against the Inner Sphere, the members of the Guerrillas share few cultural ties, especially among those agents operating out in remote sectors far from the Inner Sphere itself.

Despite this and their physical distance, the common experience of living a life on the run and fighting against seemingly impossible odds has created a strong sense of solidarity within this ragtag group of rebels.

Far From The Front

Although the Sirius Sector is far from the Inner Sphere, the influence of the Galactic Council extends throughout the galaxy. The Rebel Guerrillas maintain a presence in Sirius where their enemy’s influence and security is often weaker, allowing them to spy on and disrupt the Council’s actions wherever they perceive them.

Often such influence is subtle and the factions which they target may sometimes be unaware of their role in this wider conflict; whether they are transporting goods destined to Inner Sphere trade outposts, capturing an undercover Guerilla agent, or assisting a group of freelance adventurers covertly employed by the Council.

Old Operators

The Rebel Guerrillas have been fighting for many years and, while most have held on to their ideals, others have become jaded. Clandestine operation leaves little room for error or mercy, even against targets who may not realise the war that they are a part of. The long conflict has also forced the Guerrillas to discover means to maintain their funding; while those near the Inner Sphere may receive donations, those in remote sectors like Sirius must often resort to mercenary work or smuggling in order to maintain their operations.

Despite this, many remain idealists at heart, determined to help their homeland regain its independence and fight against injustice wherever they see it.

Fresh Blood

Many new recruits joining the Rebel Guerrillas, especially from far-flung corners of the galaxy, are also much more mercenary in their outlook and approach. While local guides and allies in Sirius have proven vital, very few of them are eager to put their lives at stake for the sake of Mandar’s grudge against the Inner Sphere.

Some are criminals using the them to hide from local authorities, while others are guns-for-hire looking for a pay cheque. Such recruits can be dangerous for the Rebel Guerrillas, leaving them vulnerable to betrayal or rogue agents, but in remote regions like Sirius, they must take what help they can get.

Secrets of the Radiance

The Rebel Guerrillas have shown particular interest in the Zone, but presently only the highest ranking members know the reasons for this. Most believe that they are simply seeking salvage and technology, which can commonly be found in the region. However, there are whispers that they wish to discover the Dwarven technology which initially caused the Radiance.

Some supporters of the Inner Sphere in Sirius claim that they could use such a device in order to cause another disaster on the same scale as the Radiance Cascade. The Rebel Guerrillas fervently deny this as a ploy to turn the factions of Sirius against them without any evidence, though they refuse to risk revealing their actual intentions to Inner Sphere supporters.

Diplomacy

The Rebel Guerrillas are opposed to the Inner Sphere and their allies throughout the galaxy. Within Sirius, the influence of the Inner Sphere is relatively subtle; existing largely in the presence of scattered trade outposts and a handful of diplomats and agents working both openly and secretly, for their region’s interests.

Occasionally, Guerrillas might find themselves fighting with the native factions of Sirius over valuable salvage or Inner Sphere technology, due to failed smuggling operation, or to free someone with a valuable or necessary skill from prison.

The Rebel Guerrillas will ally with local factions just as often, however. Whether serving as mercenaries to afford supplies or teaming up against a common enemy, the Guerrillas are always eager to form lasting diplomatic ties within Sirius. Lasting success is rare, however, as few within the sector wish to risk angering the powerful Inner Sphere.
